From manual to AI-drive lighting design

Lighting is a niche skill. Like typography in visual design, not every architect masters it, BUT it's still important for selling a space's mood to a client. The first version of Chubic was a manual tool: drop fixtures into a room, check if it matches the brief, follow lighting rules. It was useful but the user experience was pretty heavy and long.

My goal was to redesign the entire experience to support a major shift: from manual placement to a AI-generated lighting plans. Here are the three major changes :

  1. Going 3D: Flat plans don't communicate mood

  2. Generic fixtures over specific ones: Instead of forcing users into complex fixture catalogs, we abstracted to fixture types, so the tool stays fast.

  3. AI generation, human refinement: Trained on real lighting designers' expertise, the AI proposes a plan from a prompt. Users adjust only what matters.

What I really enjoy doing: Translating a deeply technical, expert-only craft into something an architect can use in 5 minutes. The accessibility work was the most rewarding part making sure the tool felt powerful without ever feeling intimidating. Even myself I can now use it for maybe my future dream house!
